Cinder by Marissa Meyer

4 sort of typical not so typical YA stars…

Cinder

This is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles it is a twist on the normal princess stories.  This one is a different version of Cinderella.  I thought the author thinking of Cinderella as a cyborg was rather unique, and it played out well throughout the story.

Of course there are evil step sisters(only one is actually mean), and an evil stepmother.  Most importantly there is a dreamy prince whom doesn’t want to be a king. Cinder the Cyborg is a great character she is full of heart and spirit.  She is the best mechanic in town, the prince brings her an android undercover to fix.  While it’s an older model he asks it be fixed for sentimental value.  Of course this first meeting is rather awkward as Cinder has just removed her one foot and can’t bow.

The story spirals from there the good stepsister comes down with the plague that has no cure and slowly kills the person. Since Cinder was with the sister when she first showed signs the evil step mother blames her and donates her cyborg body to science to find a cure.  However something weird happens in the lab and Cinder is found more valuable than they all know.

There are of course some normal I could see that coming from a mile away moments, there were also some nice twists and turns that you don’t see coming.  The book doesn’t finish Cinder’s story it just stops… so be prepared to go ugh… now I need the second book!!  Overall I found this story really well thought out with a great twist on the Cinderella story.
