First of all this was a buddy read with the every amazing Klara @Ribbon Reviews.. if you haven’t checked out her blog yet I highly suggest you do! She does the most amazing reviews and runs the most amazing subscription box company @magicchest Which I personally subscribe to and love!!
This book had all the feels of pride and prejudice mixed with enough paranormal to make it something quite new. I loved the era this was set in, and the fact that even though it was in an era that women are looked down upon that the heroine doesn’t let that deter her from finding her sister. While Evelyn is quite strong willed she is also very smart. I very much enjoyed her quick wit and strong will when dealing with these over bearing men in her life.
It’s quite a shock these extraordinary talents that Rose has, and quite possibly Evelyn. I can’t believe that they could be so naive as to not notice something different about themselves. I love the fact that Evelyn is so devoted to her sister she is quite willing to put up with a lot to get her back. Starting off with putting up with the ever dashing Mr. Kent’s family…they rather hate Evelyn. I’m not quite sure why though, maybe it’s because they are all about keeping up with the Jones and she is not. Her candidness with Mr. Kent is really refreshing I love the friendship between the two of them. Then enters Mr. Braddok and who does he remind everyone of?? Mr. Darcy with paranormal powers… it’s amazing. I know, I know cringe a love triangle ew… but it’s not really set up like that. There is some hinting at a connection here or there but its the mystery of finding Rose and figuring out what’s going on that’s more important.
I really enjoyed the writing style of this book, while the story did have it’s moments of “why wasn’t that explained more?” I am hoping that gets better with the second book. This book definitely set the bar for witty banter and not a dull moment. The pace was fast, I never felt a lull anywhere. I enjoyed how it stayed true to the time period it was in even though the characters did have paranormal aspects to their own beings. I’m really hoping in the second book we get to see the characters come more into their own as adults. They definitely had their childish moments in this book. I would also really like some explanations as to why and what is happening with certain things. All in all I would say a rather enjoyable read and I would recommend it!
