4 evil must become good stars!!
I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.
But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a yellow brick road—but even that’s crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy.
They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas.
I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.
I’ve been trained to fight.
And I have a mission.
Everything is all topsy turvy and I don’t just mean because of the tornado. I love retelling of any kind of famous fairy tale and OZ is right up there. There is no slow beginning with this book you dive right into Amy Gumm’s life and it is a not so nice life, which may be kind of a trope in itself the down on her luck girl gets to become the hero. I didn’t care how many tropes I ran into in this book I just ate it right up. It was simple and delightful, and a pure joy to read.
Amy doesn’t know who to trust in this book she is literally just struggling to live one day at a time in Oz, however this isn’t the picture perfect Oz anymore. Dorothy has corrupted it into something evil. Good is bad and Bad is good in this new place, or so it seems. I think that is part of what made this book so good you never knew what to expect from each person she met, will this person betray her on the next page? Who knows!! Also it is YA so Amy is a little bit immature but she does realize she is immature and does grow from it throughout the book. This book is way darker than I thought it would be, not in a gory way although some parts may be a little gory. The characters are a lot more dark than I was expecting and none of it is sunshine and roses for sure.
This does end on sort of a cliffhanger, but you would kind of know that if you researched the books at all and seen that it is a series. So of course now I am waiting for book two to come in the mail… any day now… just waiting patiently…
