When my magic manifested at puberty, my parents sold me to the Illuminati. They trained me as an assassin, spy, and thief. But when they sent me to steal a magical artifact that reveals Truth in all things, I discovered that I was working for the Dark and not the Light. The Illuminati trained me well, and paid the ultimate price for their deception.

Thousands of miles away, I landed a job in a quirky little bar. But the scattered remnants of the Order still strive for world domination, and no one leaves the Illuminati alive.

My Review..

I was looking for a new urban fantasy series with a strong heroine.  I’m not quite sure  I found it but this series did start out with a strong protagonist.  Erin has been lied to since she was fourteen, she thought she was a hero but just found out she’s a villain.  So of course that brings on a ton of conflict.  She also has only been trained for combat and obtaining information so any human interaction hasn’t been to make friends.  So this new world at the bar where people want to be nice to her for no apparent reason is really throwing her for a loop.  She is definitely a very strong character in many ways but also very naive in others it makes her very interesting.

I like the different uses of magic in this world, and of course there is all kinds of politics.  I’m not sure how Erin is exactly going to fit in the whole picture.  The different social classes of vampires , werewolves, witches, mages, etc was interesting.  I always fall for the side characters and there are a ton to pick from in this book and I definitely have my favorites already picked out. I kind of want to see what happens in the next book.

About the Author…

B.R. KingsolverI made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a masters in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. Ive skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. Ive hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I havent done enough of it. Ive seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday Id like to see Banff.

  1. Huh. I was wondering if this was another name for Barbara Kingsolver since I read a bunch of her books in the past. I had to google it. Guess they might be cousins that never met or something. (Because you really wanted to know this.)
This book just sounded okay for you. Do you think you really will read the next one?
